I Never Wear My Elk Skin Gloves

because I want no distance between the earth
& me, nothing separating these cracked
fingernails & scabbed fingers from loam,
dirt, & duff, no space between the heft of hog
hoe & calloused hands because the straight
grain ash—polished by the sweat & oil of my
palms—transforms the hoe from mere tool to
an exact extension of my trail-weary arms.
